Tiling a kitchen countertop is an option that is available to homeowners, especially is you don’t have the kind of money needed to fit solid stone countertops. Tile countertops can provide you with many interesting options in designing the overall look of your kitchen.

Tiles come in many shapes and sizes but getting them to fit on a pre-designed kitchen countertop surface would pose no problems. Countertop tiles can be cut and trimmed to fit any bends or curves that you design onto your kitchen countertop. This flexibility allows you to go wild with your kitchen countertop design without having to work around the limits of your countertop surface. The only thing that you should pay attention to is the amount of surface area that needs to be filled so that you get enough countertop tiles to do the job.

Other than shape and size, countertop tiles come in a whole range of materials. You can have stone tiles like granite or marble that can provide you with an expensive look without having to actually spend so much. Glass tiles can add a little exotic look to your countertop although it can be a little fragile if subjected to heavy activity. If you tile your countertop with glass tiles, then it might be a good idea to design a little island in the kitchen, mobile or otherwise, to do heavy work on.

Ceramic tiles on the kitchen countertop might not be a very good idea unless you really know how to take care of them. Ceramic tile are usually quite porous. A kitchen countertop tiled with ceramic can be very susceptible to staining. There are sealing agents available to preserve the beauty of ceramic countertop tile but you have to care for it properly so that the sealing agent is strong enough to protect the ceramic tiles.

The grout will have to be cared for as well when it comes to tiling kitchen countertops. Ensure that the grout is properly laid and that is well sealed. Poorly sealed grouts can absorb moisture and be a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus.

To make an outdoor counter the best place to gather requires choosing the right surface material for the countertop. Every home and environment has different requirements, as does every budget. Research what materials are available before making the final decision.

Polymer

A plastic composite, polymer countertops are resistant to stain and weathering. They are readily available and one of the least expensive materials to purchase or maintain. They also do not require a substrate under them, being solid enough to stand on their own over the frame of the counter support structure. However, if it is in the budget, other options may look more appealing.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is the standard material for any countertop, inside or out. Available in almost any color, shape, or size, it is easy to find a variety of glazed ceramic tile for any look. Easy to clean, ceramic tile is stain resistant. However, the grout around the tiles requires sealing to keep it from staining. A substrate must be provided to support the tile, and the substrate must be weather resistant. Water can percolate through the grout and damage the substrate if it is not intended to resist water. Research the many tile options before making a decision about installing a glazed ceramic tile countertop.

Stone Tile

Like ceramic tile, stone tile countertops requires a substrate, and a weather resistant one. If the substrate rots, the whole counter will have to be replaced. Most stone tiles will not be as stain and water resistant as ceramic, but they do make a solid work surface that is resistant to weather and heat. Regular applications of a sealant will protect the stone and grout from water and stains. There are many varieties of stone to choose from. Pick one that will resist the type of work the counter will be put to. If used as a cutting surface, a harder stone will be needed then if it just holds cups.

Granite

Solid and beautiful, granite comes in a wide variety of colors, shades and patterns. The speckles of quartz will sparkle in the sun if granite is used for an outdoor countertop. When installed in a single piece, spanning the narrow width of the counter frame, no substrate is required for granite. However, because of the weight it is best to have a professional install a granite countertop. Be sure to apply a sealant regularly to keep water and stains out of the surface of the granite.

Slate

Slate can be installed as a tile, or as a solid countertop as granite is. As a solid countertop, no substrate is needed under slate. It is less porous than many other materials and so resists stains and water very well. A standard household cleaner will tidy up a slate countertop very well, and a layer of mineral oil will impart a subtle shine.

When designing a new outdoor counter, there are many shapes and forms to choose from. The countertop is but one aspect of such a project, but one which will create a great centerpiece for a patio or garden.

Kitchen countertops are one of the first things people see when they walk into your kitchen. Many people opt to replace their old countertops when they renovate their home, either because they are putting their home on the market or just because they want to improve the look and functionality of their kitchen.

When it comes to countertops, there are two basic types: solid and laminate. While most do-it-yourselfers can install laminate countertops themselves, if you are installing solid countertops, you’ll need to hire a professional. Even though the solid countertops are quite a bit more expensive than the laminate ones, they are much more durable and lend an air of luxury to your home.

Solid Surface Countertops

Solid surface countertops are far more durable than laminate countertops, although they are also more expensive.

Still, they offer several benefits to homeowners. For one thing, they are non porous, which means they are more sanitary and they’re not going to warp or bow. They are also available in a variety of colors and although solid surface countertops are prone to scratches, in most cases, the scratches can be sanded out.

For the most part though, solid surface countertops need little to no maintenance and are easy to clean.

Laminate Countertops

Laminate countertops are cost effective and can be installed by a professional or mot do-it-yourselfers. While laminate countertops don’t offer luxury, they are durable and rather easy to install so even if you pay a professional to do the job, it won’t cost an arm and a leg. What’s more, laminate countertops come in a variety of decorative colors and finishes so you can easily match your décor.

They are easy to clean with a damp cloth and detergent. Although the more expensive countertops can withstand more heat than laminate can, placing a hot pan on a laminate countertop can result in a burn so it is wise to always use a hot pad.

Ceramic Tile Countertops

Ceramic tile countertops are another choice when renovating your kitchen and they can be quite inexpensive and very attractive, though there are some disadvantages. For one thing, the grout between the tiles can be difficult to clean and it may stain.

In addition, if you ever need a large smooth surface area, you won’t find it on a ceramic tiled countertop. Still, there are those who would have no other kind of countertop so it just depends on what your needs are. Before you decide on the countertop that is right for your home, visit your local home improvement store so that you can actually touch the textures of the different countertops.

While you can read about the features online, nothing beats being able to run your hand over the fixtures you are thinking of putting in your home.

There are numerous kitchen countertop options available to consumers that are in the market for kitchen countertops. Each different type of countertop material offers its advantages and disadvantages. The “best” kitchen countertop can only be figured out on an individual basis. Some of the more popular types of countertops used in kitchen remodeling are made out of stone, wood or human-made materials.

Stone Kitchen Countertops

Several companies manufacture countertops out of stone such as granite and marble. Stone countertops can increase the overall value of a home. Professionally installing granite kitchen countertops and marble kitchen countertops can cost between $40 and $120 per square foot. Discount granite countertops and prefabricated granite countertops are available for a slightly lower price. Engineered quartz kitchen countertops can be fabricated and installed for around the same price as granite countertops.

Granite is quarried from a large number of places around the globe. Since granite forms in unique patterns, granite countertop consumers have an endless array of patterns and colors to choose from. Granite countertops are harder and less porous than marble countertops, while engineered quartz is harder and less porous than both granite and marble.

Wood Kitchen Countertops

Countertops can be fashioned out of a variety of woods like mahogany, oak, teak, cherry or maple. Wooden kitchen countertops and butcher block countertops can cost upwards of $100 per square foot depending on the type of wood used. Wood is naturally a great material to use in the construction of countertops despite the required regular maintenance linked with wood.

Stainless Steel Kitchen Countertops

Many commercial kitchens employ metal countertops like stainless steel and copper. Stainless steel countertops can cost between $50 and $150 per square foot to have installed. Stainless steel is stain resistant and can be safely bleached. Consumers can purchase these countertops with a brushed or textured finish. Some of the edge options that are available for metal countertops are rolled, bullnose or Marine (no drip).

Concrete Kitchen Countertops

Countertops made out of concrete can cost about $100 per square foot installed. These are often poured on-site and can weigh several hundred pounds once cured. Concrete kitchen countertops require a top sealant to keep them from staining and prematurely deteriorating; concrete can be porous and retain stains.

Other Types of Kitchen Countertops

Other common types of countertops are solid surface countertops, laminate countertops and ceramic tile countertops. Installing laminate kitchen countertops can cost between $15 and $60 per square foot. Having ceramic tile installed can cost between $5 and $15 per square foot. Laminate countertops can be made out of a wide variety of colors and patterns making it easy for consumers to match a countertop to their décor. Laminate countertops are also associated with low maintenance requirements. Ceramic tiles also offer a variety of colors and textures making them ideal for consumers that desire a specific color or texture theme.

If your bathroom vanity countertops have seen more than their fair share of wear and tear, look into getting a replacement. You can make your bathroom shine again with a brand new custom countertop. Maybe you want to add surface space for added functionality. Or perhaps you’ve just redecorated and your old one looks out of place.

No matter what your reasoning is, you can find a fabulous new countertop to suit your needs. Choices range from sleek, low-maintenance stainless-steel designs to high-end cultured marble for a more elegant design. Glass countertops are available too, and are great for guest bathrooms. They require more cleaning so you might not want to choose glass for a busy bathroom.

Granite is popular because of its durability and resistance to stains. It also won’t show the dirt as much so you won’t feel the need to clean it quite as often as solid-color surfaces. If you choose granite for your countertop solution, you will need to keep in mind that it will need regular resealing and maintenance every 6 months to a year, depending on use and environmental conditions. Don’t use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials on granite because they will only end up damaging the smooth finish.

Tile is a great choice for bathroom vanity countertops. The larger the tiles, the less grout you will have to clean. Tile itself is easy to maintain and you can use any regular household cleaners to keep them looking spotless. This is also a very inexpensive solution for anyone on a tight budget.

Man-made quartz is a nice alternative for anyone who wants to imitate the look of limestone or marble without the expense. It doesn’t require the maintenance and sealing like granite countertops and it gives you plenty of options when it comes to color and design. Quartz is long-lasting and durable which makes it a practical choice for bathroom vanity countertops…

No matter what your style or taste, there’s a perfect countertop just waiting for you. Get rid of that ugly stained countertop and replace it with something new, fresh, and easy to clean. Look at what some of the leading companies in countertop design are currently offering to help you make the right choice for your bathroom.

Want to do a quick fix for your kitchen? Start by sprucing up your countertop area. Replace that discolored laminate or chipped ceramic tile–along with the sink, faucet and wall tile.

To start this kitchen transformation, assess your cabinet color and style. A little contrast can do wonders for your kitchen design. If the cabinets have a neutral color with a flat front panel, try a bold colored sink or a rough texture on the wall tile for contrast.

Kitchen Countertop Ideas

While granite countertops remain a big hit, look around for other materials.

Quartz, which resembles granite but is considered more durable, is made in a wide range of patterns and colors. Try a dark blue or green with light colored cabinets to add some contrast.

Concrete sounds industrial, but can be softened by using warm colors and soft textures. This could add a new twist to your kitchen remodeling and lead to interesting combinations with the faucet and wall tile.

Spruce Up the Kitchen Faucet

Your kitchen faucet is a workhorse, so look for a style that also has functionality. Look for a kitchen faucet with a sprayer and a few features to control the water volume. Here’s more on how to select a kitchen faucet.

Add Personality to Your Kitchen Design

As you design the new space, don’t forget to add your own style. It might be randomly placed stainless steel wall tiles within a more traditional Italian marble pattern. A quick fix shouldn’t be boring, after all. Here are some other ways to personalize your kitchen remodeling.

All it takes is a little creativity to add new life to your kitchen design. You’ll be amazed at the results!

Limestone can be a good choice for kitchen flooring due to its subtle patterning and pale, neutral colors. This all makes limestone kitchen flooring a good choice in contemporary kitchen design. It is also a good choice because it provides hardness, low porosity, looks attractive, and is hardwearing and long-lasting. It also has oil resistant properties, although is should be sealed to prevent staining and to keep it looking its best and to be able to clean and maintain. So limestone is usually offered in a honed (unpolished) finish. Its softer, subtle hues make it a frequent choice of homeowners, architects and designers for flooring, countertops and interior or exterior walls.

Limestone kitchen flooring can possess a high resistance to freezing and thawing conditions. Therefore, limestone can be used in just about any atmospheric condition without it being affected. It is also exceedingly durable and easily maintained.

Limestone has been used in flooring for thousands of years. Limestone is a sedimentary stone that is made up of a least 50% calcite or calcium carbonate content, as well as being composed of grains, crushed sea shells, bones of sea animals, or fragments or biologic origin including fossils and dinosaur bones. Limestone can be a calcareous stone in that it can be highly reactive to certain acidic substances such as vinegars, and wine. Limestone is softer than igneous rocks such as granite, however some types of limestone are very hard and dense. This makes limestone suitable for most interior applications including kitchen flooring. Limestone also has a good non-slip surface, and limestone floor tile can be easily stained, making it a good choice for kitchen floors. Floor tiles can be etched by acids. Limestone has a compressive strength of 30,000/lbs./sq. inch.

Limestone kitchen floor tiles are available in colors such as black, gray, white, yellow, and brown.

Pure limestone is white or off-white. However due to impurities such as clay, sand, iron oxide, or other materials, limestone tends to exhibit different colors. There are several different types of surface finishes. The texture variations are produced because limestone tiles vary in shade and surface appearance. Limestone is made up of a large family of different kinds of stone that can vary in character. Limestone kitchen flooring tiles are polished, honed, brushed, and water worn.

The variations in limestone vary greatly in hardness, density, and porosity from stone to stone. Some types of limestone tend to be very soft and should not be cut on. The surface of the stone can easily scratch. Some types of limestone are very dense and hard and can be finished to a polished or a glossy shiny surface. Softer stones cannot be polished to this high gloss finish.

Limestone has long been the choice of architects and many landmarks around the world, especially in North America and Europe. Limestone has been used in many public building such as train stations, banks and other structures built in the early 20th and late 19th centuries. Limestone provides character and depth to any kitchen.

Granite is one of the most popular materials around for countertops since it is a durable product that can last for centuries, it can withstand hot items being placed on it, and it does not chip or scratch easily. Besides its durability, it is a beautiful natural material with over 900 different types of granite available for purchase in the United States.

Should Granite be Sealed?

For most granite countertops, sealing may not be worth your time or money. The main reason is that most granite is too dense for the sealer to penetrate into the material and it simply sits on the surface and either evaporates after it is applied or wears off. Some granite may benefit from sealing if it is porous and the quality is not high. You can perform a two-part test to find out if it needs to be sealed or not.

Water test

1. Pour a tablespoon of water on a small section of the granite.

2. Wait 15 minutes and then wipe up.

3. If the granite hasn’t darkened up or soaked up the water go onto the second test.

4. If it has darkened or it soaked up the water, you need to apply a sealer.

Oil test

1. Put a drop of mineral oil on another small section of granite.

2. Wait 10 minutes and then wipe up.

If the granite did not darken or absorb the water or oil, sealing will not be necessary. If it did darken up you will need to seal the countertop. The test spots will lighten and disappear in about 30 minutes and will not hurt the stone. Based on the sealer purchased or installed along with the use will depend on how often it needs to be reapplied. Some do-it-yourself products will need to be reapplied every 6 months while some professionally installed products may last up to 15 years.

Maintenance and Use

Talk about easy, simply wipe up any spills immediately, clean the countertops with a mild soap, wipe it down with a clean damp cloth, and then dry with a soft dishtowel.

Even though granite is almost impervious to normal wear and tear, there are some rules you should follow.

• Use a trivet under hot pots and cookware. The heat will not damage the granite, but it will remind people that the pot is hot.

• Use a cutting board instead of cutting directly on the granite. Granite will damage your cutlery very quickly.

• Do not sit or stand on granite countertops. Granite is durable, but it is also brittle and can have veins going through the material that are natural weak points.

• Even after granite is sealed, its porous surface is not impervious to staining and etching.

• Use coasters under all drinks, especially alcoholic, citrus, and coffee

• Do not use bleach, glass cleaner, degreasers, ammonia, vinegar, or cleaners contain lemon or orange

• Soaps and toothpaste should not be left on the granite. Use a dish to place them in.

Over the last decade, granite has quickly become one of the more popular materials used in the building of kitchen counters. With its incredible strength, resistance to damage, and pleasing appearance, it is no wonder that it has seen an upswing in use. This said, though, many tend to overlook the fact that granite tends to come in more than the traditional color. While this may be the classic look for such an area, one can get all of the benefits of granite while still enjoying its many different natural colors. As a decorating material, granite simply has more versatility than many are led to believe.

Traditional Granit Countertops

Brown granite tends to be more common than other colors for one good reason – it is the least expensive. It maintains the heat resistance and durability of all other sort of marble, and can feature many beautiful striations and patterns.

Green and Blue Granit Countertops

Green and blue granite are unique, yet still affordable, sorts of granite. Each is available in a variety of shades, and are characterized by how well they tend to work with various kitchen set ups. Pure colors can still be prohibitively expensive (especially in green), but pale in price to some of the other colors.

Black Granit Countertops

Black granite is somewhat of a status symbol and, like marble, can make a kitchen look incredibly modern and dynamic. This said, black granite is a bit more rare than some of the other colors, and thus may cost significantly more. Pure black granite countertops, however, are incredibly beautiful and cannot be easily duplicated by any other material.

Red Granit Countertops

Of the granite countertop colors, red is both the most unique and most expensive. Presenting anywhere from a light pink to a dark red, these counters are quite expensive due to their rarity. For those looking to make their kitchen one of a kind and have the money to spend, though, red granite is an absolutely wonderful material.

Be it a traditional brown granite or one of the more exotic varieties, there is nothing quite like granite for kitchen countertop construction. Perhaps it is because of the strength or versatility, but almost any home can benefit from the use of this wonderful rock. Prices tend to fluctuate by season and by the area of origin of the granite, but a savvy buyer can still find a good deal on the perfect material. If you are considering constructing a kitchen, think of all the different granite countertop colors.
